JGW+ Success Story – Iori Williams
Iori began his JGW+ journey when it the Pre-Apprentice Programme. He had left school with not many GCSEs and no idea what he wanted to do with his life but as a passionate Swansea City supporter his dream was to, somehow, work in a job in some sort of sporting capacity.
Iori started on the JW+ advancement strand and was enrolled onto the 1st4Sport Level 1 in Assistant Sports Coaching Award at Haverfordwest County AFC with Achieve More Training. He found the coaching award a very helpful insight into working in a role around sport or coaching. He also found that the other units we deliver to be very beneficial, such as developing an on-line presence, building confidence, and developing his CV.
Iori already had his GCSE in English, but not in maths. Whilst on the Level 1 he successfully passed the Application of Number Level 2, meaning he now had a GCSE C or equivalent in both English and Maths.
At the end of the course, he went to a local primary school to fully complete the course with a 4-week placement. He wasn’t too fussed on going, but knew he had to in order to complete the programme.
To his surprise, and our delight, he discovered that he really enjoyed working in a primary school. His own very recent experiences in secondary school were not very positive, but he found that this primary school was quite different.
He wanted to further progress his studies and enquired about different courses.
Iori has since progressed onto an Apprenticeship PE and School Sport Route at the same primary school where he did his placement – they were so pleased with his attitude, performance, and general demeanour on placement that they snapped him up!
Iori’s story is an example of the benefits of the JGW+ programme offered him with individual support and the work experience placement which has helped open doors for him and other young people who need a little direction in their life after leaving school. Lori is on course to qualify as a level 3 Teaching Assistant and Sport Coach and is on the pathway for a career in Sport or Education.
