As a 1-2-1 Teaching Assistant, you will provide dedicated support to a pupil (Year 1) within the classroom and wider school environment, working closely with the Year 1 class teacher and school staff to promote the pupil’s educational, social, emotional and personal development.

Duties include:

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care, including toileting, nappy changing, wiping and maintaining personal hygiene, while respecting the pupil’s dignity and privacy.
  • Provide dedicated 1-2-1 support to the pupil throughout the school day, in and outside the classroom.
  • Support the pupil to access learning and develop their communication, literacy, numeracy, social and independence skills.
  • Work closely with the class teacher and school staff to support the pupil’s learning and wellbeing.
  • Follow school policies, including safeguarding, behaviour, health and safety and intimate-care procedures.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality and appropriate boundaries at all times.

Essential Criteria:

  • A genuine passion for working with children and supporting their development.
  • An eagerness to learn and develop within the role of a Teaching Assistant.
  • Patience, empathy and a calm approach when supporting children with individual needs.
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality and appropriate boundaries at all times.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake personal-care duties, including nappy changing, wiping and supporting the pupil with toileting and hygiene.
  • Ability to follow instructions, school policies and individual support plans.

Ability to listen, learn and take guidance from experienced teaching and support staff.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Any previous experience working with children
  • Any previous experience with special educational needs (SEN)
  • Strong Welsh, English & Mathematics
  • Communicational skills relevant to both children and adults
  • Competent skills in numeracy, literacy and ICT
  • Ability to self-manage and organise own time

  • A level of maturity with working in a school environment will be required

As part of this apprenticeship, the successful candidate will undertake a structured training programme that includes:

  • On-the-job training – gaining practical experience within a school setting.
  • Off-the-job training – attending sessions covering safeguarding, behaviour management, child development, and learning strategies.
  • Regular assessments and feedback to track progress and improve skills.
  • Additional learning support, particularly in literacy, numeracy, and communication.
