Headteacher leads by example with fitness qualification and outdoor gym for school community

A Holyhead headteacher is putting his passion for fitness into action: completing a qualification in under six months while helping staff and pupils get more active with a new outdoor gym space.

Gwyn Williams, Headteacher at Ysgol Llanfawr, has completed his Level 2 fitness qualification with Achieve More Training (AMT), balancing his studies with the demands of leading a school.

Inspired by a desire to return to working in the fitness industry, Gwyn has shown that even experienced leaders can take a new step as learners and use their skills to support others.

His enthusiasm is already making a difference at Ysgol Llanfawr. Gwyn leads fitness sessions for staff and secured funding for an outdoor canopy to provide an all year round gym space at the school, creating opportunities for staff and pupils to support their fitness and wellbeing.

That commitment extends beyond the school gates. At his home gym, Gwyn also helps friends and family with their training, sharing his enthusiasm for exercise and encouraging those around him to get active.

Vikki Courtman, Gwyn’s tutor at Achieve More Training, praised both his achievement and the positive approach he brought to learning.

“He is always polite and kind, he is a joy to teach and support,” said Vikki. “He did an excellent observation on his Level 2 too. He is so keen to support others and it shows. He really is making a difference.”

Completing the course in less than six months alongside his headteacher responsibilities reflects Gwyn’s determination to develop his skills and reconnect with work he loves.

His story also highlights how the benefits of learning can reach far beyond the person gaining a qualification. From staff fitness sessions to an outdoor gym for the school community, Gwyn is turning his own professional development into opportunities for others.
