This Pre-apprenticeship Programme is a 16-week traineeship course aimed at 16-18-year-olds that delivers the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Assistant Coaching (Sport and Physical Activity). The programme is delivered and facilitated by Matthew Kelly our Achieve More Training Tutor at the Professional Learning Centre at Haverfordwest County AFC. The course focuses on the skills and competencies required to be able to assist the delivery of sports or physical activity coaching sessions under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach and prepares learners in becoming Teacher Assistants with a specialism in PE/ Health and Well-being.
This qualification prepares learners for employment as a coaching assistant in sport or physical activity. A level 1 coach can assist the delivery and review of sports and physical activity coaching sessions under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach. The qualification introduces learners to the practical and theoretical aspects of delivering and evaluating coaching activities in sport or physical activity.
The qualification is an entry point to coaching, depending on the ability and confidence of the learner. It is directed at learners who have an interest in sport or physical activity.
The qualification is recognised as the industry standard level 1 qualification for coaching assistants by UK Coaching. It has been aligned to the UKCC criteria and will allow progression onto a UKCC-endorsed qualification. It is also endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
Learners will also complete modules on Behaviour Management, Building Confidence & Self-Belief, Communication & Listening Skills, CV Development, Developing A Professional Online Portfolio, Education For Sustainable Development & Global Citizenship, First Aid Awareness, Health & Safety, Micro-Teaching, Safeguarding, Teaching & Learning Styles and Working With Others.
We also cover WEST (Maths, English & Digital Literacy), Learn Welsh, mock interviews including interview techniques and we fully prepare the learners for their work placements by giving them an insight as to what to expect when working in a school.
To be eligible for the programme, learners need to be 16-18 years old and have not achieved a C grade in either Maths or English. Each learner will receive £40-50 a week plus travel expenses.
We have several Level 2 and 3 Apprentices already in placement in schools in Pembrokeshire, including at Ysgol Arberth, Johnston CP School, Broad Haven CP School, Milford Comprehensive School, Ysgol Harri Tudor, Sageston, Gelliswick, Meads and St Ostwald’s.
